Railroad Crossing at University Boulevard Opens

Sugar Land, Texas - A new railroad crossing at University Boulevard and U.S. Highway 90A opened on Monday.

Quiet-zone technology has been installed at the new crossing; however, train horns may sound as conductors become familiar with the new intersection.

The new crossing is part of the ongoing extension of University Boulevard across U.S. 90A and the railroad tracks. The new roadway north of U.S. 90A and south of Constellation Field has been named South Stadium Drive. The roadway south of U.S. 90A will remain University Boulevard.

When complete, University Boulevard and South Stadium Drive will accomplish the long-planned “Burney Road Bypass” project, an important north-south corridor that provides for the mobility of residents north of U.S. 90A while alleviating traffic in residential areas along Main Street and Burney Road.

Union Pacific Railroad’s approval of the new crossing was contingent on the closure of the Wood Street crossing. Work began in January to realign Kempner Street between Main Street and Wood Street.

Kempner Street’s connection to Main Street was relocated north of the previous intersection as part of the improvements to provide better traffic flow in the area.

The project also included modifications to the intersection at U.S. 90A and Savoy.

Motorists should obey all traffic signs, stay alert and expect delays during the construction. Construction updates will be posted at www.sugarlandtx.gov/construction. For questions about train horns and crossing arms, call the UPR Response Management Communication Center at (888) 877-7267.
