Sugar Land Celebrates National Travel and Tourism Initiative

Sugar Land, TX – Visit Sugar Land Convention and Visitor Services, the City of Sugar Land’s official Tourism program, has partnered with the city’s Cultural Arts program, to expand the U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week campaign from the standard one-week length, to a month-long initiative that will blend art with excitement every Saturday in May. The month-long initiative is designed to feature four different destination venues throughout the city where the traveling audience will be exposed to a different art medium showcasing Sugar Land’s distinguishing features like its history, global makeup and landmark destination offerings.

To kick off the endeavor, Sugar Land Town Square is the chosen venue where a live painting showcasing Sugar Land’s global makeup will be rendered during the May 7 Rhythm and Brews concert intermission. Sugar Land Town Square is the city’s downtown where visitors experience shopping, dining and lodging all within walking distance.

Then on Saturday, May 14, chalk art will be the medium utilized at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land to showcase the city’s rich history with an interactive chalk interpretation of the original Imperial Sugar refinery.

“Anyone traveling to the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land will have an opportunity to step into Sugar Land’s company town history and capture a present moment of the past,” said Teresa Preza, Tourism and Destination Services Administrator.

For the third installment, those traveling to Constellation Field on May 21st will experience an oversized mural painted throughout the baseball game showcasing Sugar Land’s many destination landmarks.

“Seeing our many destination offerings through an artist’s perspective generates a new level of definition to Sugar Land’s premier venues,” said Lindsay Davis, Cultural Arts Manager.

The final art installation will be conducted during the grand opening of the Fort Bend’s Children’s Discovery Center set for May 28, which will showcase photography as the art medium and feature the newly opened facility as well as the highly anticipated live entertainment venue - Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land. This final installment of Visit Sugar Land’s initiative will generate awareness of the new destination museum, which is the first attraction to open at the redeveloping Imperial refinery site.
