Ethics Task Force Applications Accepted

Sugar Land, TX - The City of Sugar Land is accepting applications from community members to fill positions on the City’s Ethics Task Force, a citizen-based committee formed to update the City Council’s Ethics Code.

The code is designed to supplement the requirements in state law to ensure Sugar Land’s elected and appointed officials are held to the highest ethical standard.

To be considered, applicants must:

  • be current residents of Sugar Land;
  • not currently hold or be running for an elected office; and
  • commit to attend all meetings scheduled during the course of the process.

A task force was formed in 2004 to create a City Council Ethics Code. The policy includes specific guidelines and regulations governing conflicts of interest, business interactions with the City, disclosure of gifts, private interests, misuse and disclosure of confidential information and restrictions on political activity and political contributions.

City Council adopted the Ethics Code in December 2005. Changes in state law prompted City Council to recently establish a Citizen’s Task Force on Ethics to conduct a 10-year review and provide a report to City Council on recommended updates.

City Council is expected to appoint seven members to the task force after carefully considering applications.

During the approximately eight-month process, the Ethics Task Force will attend committee meetings and workshops with City Council. The two-hour meetings will generally be held during weekday evenings.

Applications may be submitted through March 4 at https://volunteer.sugarlandtx.gov.
